If a player from the MLB draft signs a major league contract, does this mean he will be in the majors?
Im asking mainly about if Pedro Alvarez and if he will be playing for the Pirates this season.
If a player inks a deal saying he’ll be on the ML roster, well, there you go, and such a deal has happened before.
However, like any personal services contract in the USA and elsewhere, a player’s services can be assigned… like to the minors. However, unless worded differently, his contract likely would say he is a ML player, in which case he would draw at least the minimum ML salary, no matter where he is (I don’t know about per diem allowances for food, etc). This often happens when a player is hurt and makes a rehab start… his services have been assigned for a game to a minor league club.
But no, a contract not explicitly putting a player on the 25-man roster for the whole season does not get that player a pass into the majors for the whole year. Minor league assignment, a trade to a foreign club (which happens), etc, could be reasons for this. He could be cut for hitting .137 in 35 games with 2 RBI… he’d be out of baseball, but would collect his salary…
